Pico Della Mirandola (extra credit)

Renaissance humanists had a very positive view of mankind. They greatly appreciated past human achievements, and had an exceptionally high view of human potential . Read through some of Pico della Mirandola's Oration on the Dignity of Man. Cite a line or two that particular well illustrates Pico's "humanism," i.e., either his appreciation for the past or his optimism about human potential. As an alternative, just cite a line that you particularly like from this work and explain why you like it.

  1. Pico says claims that God is the mightiest architect there is because of all of the beauty he has created. Then he says, But when this work was done, the Divine Artificer still longed for some creature which might comprehend the meaning of so vast an achievement, which might be moved with love at its beauty and smitten with awe at its grandeur". Pico claims that God wants to create a creature of sort that is able to understand everything God has done. This shows Pico's optimism in human potential because he states that in our beginning we were created to understand the work of the mightiest architect in existence, God. Plus since that is why we were created then in the future we would gain an understanding and build off of it to create and add even more beauty into the world that God has created.

  2. "Let us also seek the opinion of Pythagoras, that wisest of men, known as a wise man precisely because he never thought himself worthy of that name." I really liked this line from the reading because it's what we should all do. It is basically saying how we should be humble when doing things. You may be good at something, but don't be cocky about it. Be confident, yet humble. He knows he is wise, but he also knows he could be more wise. Therefore, he will keep increasing his knowledge to learn even more. He can always better himself. This is such a great example overall I love it.

  3. "The nature of all other creatures is defined and restricted within laws which We have laid down; you, by contrast, impeded by no such restrictions" i think this line really shows the potential in humans a that we are capable of so much more then we think we do because this shows that animals are restricted to what they were evolved to perfect in there habitat and with humans were evolved to problem solve and to continually change for the better in any environment and situation put in front of us.

  5. Reading through Pico della Mirandola's Oration on the Dignity of Man I enjoyed this Chaldean saying "man is a living creature of varied, multiform and ever-changing nature." I like it because it means that everybody is different in their own way and nature helps shape that. It shows how much humans evolve and how well they can adapt to changes. Pico is optimistic about the future because of his optimism of human potential.

  6. "We have made you a creature neither of heaven nor of earth, neither mortal nor immortal, in order that you may, as the free and proud shaper of your own being, fashion yourself in the form you may prefer"

I like this quote because Pico della Mirandela put it in his writing to give evidence that humans are here on this earth and are free to do whatever they please. We can go out into the world and be who we want to be and create our own paths.

  7. Pico Della Mirandola said, “man's place in the universe is somewhere between the beasts and the angels, but, because of the divine image planted in him, there are no limits to what man can accomplish”
Especially last sentence encourage me to study in abroad. And this saying emphasize the god who doesn't care about discrimination. When he focus on human nature in the first part, It is also giving question how men standard to live life.

"God the Father, the Mightiest Architect, had already raised, according to the precepts of His hidden wisdom..." Really showed me that the humanists really appreciated the past human acheivements and having God was one of them.

  9. "But when this work was done, the Divine Artificer still longed for some creature which might comprehend the meaning of so vast an achievement, which might be moved with love at its beauty and smitten with awe at its grandeur. When, consequently, all else had been completed in the very last place, He bethought Himself of bringing forth man." I really like this quote because is tells how God the architect created all of earth and the creatures that roam it, and when he was done he wanted to create something that was capable of appreciating all of the work that he had done. this is a very interesting and enlightening way of looking at why God created man.

  10. "God is the mightiest architect there is because of all of the beauty he has created." Showed me that the people of the Renaissance era truly valued humans before and what they have accomplished.
